"When I interviewed and took this position, I was of course aware of the pre-existing involvement of the Wilpons and the Mets with Bernie Madoff," Alderson said Monday.

The son of Martin Luther King Jr. is reportedly interested in becoming a minority owner of the New York Mets. The New York Post reported Sunday that Martin Luther King III is part of a bid that includes former Mets first baseman Ed Kranepool, Donn Clendenon Jr. and television executive Larry Meli. Clendenon's father was MVP of the Mets' 1969 World Series victory.

Darryl Strawberry will run to the top of the Empire State Building to raise money for cancer research. The former baseball slugger will race up 1,576 steps and 86 floors to the Observatory on Tuesday with about 100 other participants as part of the Empire State Building Run-Up. They're raising money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

If you're old enough, you may remember the great Cincinnati Reds teams of the 1970s. Led by the likes of Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez and Pete Rose, The Big Red Machine made four trips to the World Series ('70, '72, '75, '76) and fell short in two other seasons in which they made the NLCS (73, 79). With so many playoff appearances in a short period of time, it must have been easy for Reds fans to take those special years for granted.
