The New York Mets only needed the fifth inning to defeat the Washington Nationals by the score of 5-1.  The Mets scored four times in the fifth inning and then held the Nationals scoreless to win the game 5-1.

Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran both hit home runs in the fifth inning.  Reyes’s home run was a solo shot, but Beltran’s home run was a three-run homer that put the game out of reach for the Nationals.  The other Mets run came in the first inning when Ryan Church went deep.

John Maine pitched 6.2 innings to pick up the win and improve his record to 1-1 on the season.  Joe Smith pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and Billy Wagner pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.

What do you think Mets fans?  Are the Mets going to go on a nice winning streak during the next week?
