Actually, I don't know if I would have jumped at the chance to trade Pelfrey, I never love to trade away pitching, especially since the Kazmir debacle, I thought possibly that Pelfrey was not ready for the bigs but that shows what I know. I agree with Large, the fact that Pelfrey has gained some confidence and is pitching much more aggressively, it has allowed him to use his pitches effectively. I think too the change in philosophy was what he needed. I'm sure he did learn stuff from Pederson but just having a guy say it to you differently makes all the difference. While I'm not going to jump on the Jerry Manual bandwagon just yet, I do think that Dan Warthen deserves some credit for the success that the Mets pitching staff is having right now.

I think the reason for his improvement is aggressiveness and confidence. Schneider has called a more agressive game for Pelfrey. Use the four-seamer early in the count to set up his nasty two-seam sinker. Once he had success with that, NOW he believes his stuff can get major leagers out. No more nibbling on the corners, walking guys. Every pitcher gives up hits. when you compound them with walks, you get killed.
How many walks does he have lately?
Two in his last 22 innings, none in the last 15. I rest my case.

If I had asked you a month ago if you would trade Pelphrey for Matt Holliday you would have jumped at the chance. Now I am not sure you would trade him for anyone in the league. He has looked amazing over the last 5 starts. What do you think is the reason for this improvement?

I agree with what you say. I think early before the season started the feeling was to win the NL East you would have to win at least 90+ games. No one counted on the Mets and Phillies struggling like they have (the Mets earlier and the Phillies more recently) and the Braves seem to have fallen off the map. If the Mets can continue to play like they have, espeically this good pitching, there is no reason to belive the Mets can't win the division. But I do think they have to win the division because it looks like the Wild Card is coming out of the NL Central.

Well, I look at it this way. What will it take to win the division?
88 wins sounds reasonable. With a 51-44 record, it would take 37-30 to win it. Are they capable?
I think the last 9 games shows that they are.
