The Mets scored six times in the first inning to complete the sweep of the Brewers on Wednesday afternoon. The big hit of the inning was a grand slam off the bat of Ryan Church who was back in the line up today after sitting out last nights game. Church seems to still be trying to get himself back in game shape and it is good to have him back. I was so happy for him when the ball left the yard, you know he has been itching to get back into the thick of things. After Church hit the grand slam, Brian Schneider followed with a solo homer two batters latter. The Mets did not score again until Nick Evans hit a two RBI pinch hit single in the eighth inning.
The offense handed Oliver Perez a six run lead, but he really didn’t pitch all that well. He allowed two runs on five hits, he stuck out five, but he also walked five. Seriously Oliver-we don’t need a heart attack right now, with John Maine out and Pedro Martinez questionable (although the Mets aren’t saying that just yet) the Mets need the starters they have to go out there and give them some wins. The bullpen again did their job today. As of late, the bullpen has pitched well-but you know they are a meltdown waiting to happen.
Jose Reyes is on fire. He leads the National League in hits with 180, he is currently the only every day player in the Mets lineup hitting over .300 ( at end of play today his average is .306) He tied the franchise record for stolen bases when he swiped his 281st bag in the fourth inning. Reyes also now has a new career high in triples, hitting his league leading 18th triple of the season in the second inning of the game. Of course, they Mets stranded him at third, but that is a story for another day… Reyes has said that he is determined to not fall off late in the season like he did last year in September. Many Mets fans blame the abysmal output of Reyes as one of the key factors in the Mets collapse at the end of 2007.
The Mets are on a role. They return to Shea Stadium atop the NL East with a 2.5 game lead on the Phillies (as of the writing of the blog the Nationals and Phillies had yet to start their game-GO NATS!” Right now, I am a Mets fan, and a fan of any team playing the Phillies! Anyway, to get back to what I was saying, the Mets have won 20 of their last 27 games are are a season high 18 games over .500. The Mets right now have 79 wins with 22 games left to play. If I had told you in May that the Mets could conceivably win 90 games this season-you would have told me I was crazy-now it is a distinct possibility that the Mets will win 90 games.
Ok, so the Phillies now come to town for three games. This is the last the Mets will see of the Phillies n the regular season. Wow-who was in charge of planning that? Shouldn’t the Mets and the Phillies be playing each other at the end of September. I hate it when the schedule plays out like that-MLB better think about that next year when they plan the season.

I agree. Sept 8 is too soon for the Mets and Phils to be done with each other. They should be playing the last weekend of the season. I magine the drama, three game series , Phillies trail by one game, could you take it?
