The Mets know that rookie Ike Davis will have his ups and downs. They understand that Jose Reyes is still working his way back into form. They can live with Jeff Francoeur’s inconsistency.
But when the Mets need offense, they know that they need Jason Bay.
And so far, they haven’t liked what they have seen.
“I’m sure he’s been through something like this before,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “For me, it’s different because I haven’t seen it, haven’t witnessed it before. We feel very confident that he’ll get out of it. The only way to get out of it is to keep going up there, keep going up to the plate, keep working at it.”
What they are working on is a slump that has even the sunny Bay struggling to stay upbeat.
