The New York Mets outhit the Washington Nationals by two hits but they were no where close to that on the scoreboard as they lost 10-4 on Monday night.  Mets pitchers allowed the Nationals to score in all but three innings in the game.

Nelson Figueroa started the game and threw five innings while giving up five hits and six runs.  Figueroa took the loss as his record dropped to 2-3 on the season.  Jorge Sosa came in to pitcher after Figueroa and he gave up another four runs in the game in only one inning of action.  Duaner Sanchez, Joe Smith, and Billy Wagner all threw one inning each and did not allow one run.  Good job by those there pitchers.

Damion Easley and David Wright both hit solo home runs in the game.  Easley also had a rbi single to finish the game with two rbi.  Carlos Beltran also had a rbi single in the first inning for the Mets.

The Mets are now three full games out of first place behind the Florida Marlins.  Can the Mets rebound and win the next four games against the Nationals?  I see them winning two, but losing one more.

The New York Mets concluded a three game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, beating Arizona 5-2.  The Mets took two of three against the National League’s top team, continuing their winning ways in Arizona.  The Mets are now 15-2 in their last 17 games at Chase Field.

Johan Santana took the mound for the Mets and he was opposed by pitcher Dan Haren.  The Mets really needed a strong outing from their ace, and although it wasn’t his best showing, Santana really gutted it out and kept the Mets in the game.  Santana threw 112 pitches in his six innings of work, giving up six hits but only one run, recording eight strikeouts; he did have four walks, two of them intentional and threw three wild pitches.  He left with at 2-1 lead, but would not figure in the decision as Joe Smith gave up a run in the seventh.

In the third inning with one on and two out, Jose Reyes hit a line drive RBI single, and the Mets would take a 1-0 lead.  David Wright lead off the fourth inning with a homerun that traveled well over 376 sign for the Mets second run of the game.  With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, it looked like the Diamondback’s would take the lead when the first hitter of the inning, Chris Burke bunted the ball to pitcher Pedro Feliciano, Feliciano field the ball making an errant throw to first,  allowing Burke to advance.  Instead of just taking second base on the error, Burke tired to advance to third and breaking one of the cardinal rules of baseball, was thrown out at third on an amazing throw from right fielder Ryan Church.  Feliciano then gave up a single to pinch hitter Micha Owings (yes, the pitcher Micha Owings), however replays showed that Owings was actually out at first base.  Willie Randolph came out to argue the call, although it might have been nice if Randolph actually argued with the umpire.  At this point, the Mets would make a pitching change and Jorge Sosa would enter the game retiring both of the hitters he faced to end the inning.

The Mets bats were silent until the top of the ninth when Carlos Beltran led of the inning with a single to right.  Moises Alou hit what looked to be a sure double play ball, but because of the way the Diamondback’s defense was playing, ended up a single and moved Beltran to second.  The Mets would take the lead 3-2 when Beltran scored on a throwing error by Conner JacksonBrian Schneider laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, and with one out and runners on second and third, the Diamondbacks elected to intentionally walk Luis Castillo and go after pinch hitter Marlon Anderson; Anderson hit a bullet to right and another run scored.  Jose Reyes came to bat with the bases loaded, swung at the first pitch, and hit a sacrifice fly to make the game 5-2.  Billy Wagner would enter the game in the bottom or the ninth and on nine pitches, retired the side in order.

All in all I thought this was a much better game for the Mets.  The players seemed to really play as a team today.  The guys played hard and fought back to win.  There was a desire and toughness to them that has been missing in many games this season.  It seemed that in their two blow out losses the Mets had just given up, but I thought today with the game tied having given up the lead late, the guys really came together and fought back to win.

Taking two out of three against the Diamondback’s was a must because the Mets now move on to Los Angels to take on a hot Dodger team, who up until they lost to the Colorado Rockies yesterday, were riding an eight game winning streak.  Oliver Perez will pitch for the Mets Monday night and has an opportunity to atone for his awful outing last time out against the Pirates.  The Dodger will throw Chad Billingsley who is 1-4 on the season with a 5.20 era.

Just when you think things are looking up for the Mets, you’d be wrong.  On Wednesday there was a water main break at Shea Stadium postponing first pitch by just about an hour.  For Oliver Perez and the Mets, it was more like the dam broke and what came pouring out were waves of walks, waves of errors, waves of quitters, and I hope that there were waves of boos.

Waves of quitters you say?  Yes, waves of quitters.  The Mets were never in this game.  You can tell that just by looking at the box score.  Granted, before they even realized what was happening, they were down 7-0.  One had to figure the Mets could maybe put up a bit of a fight, but apparently fight was no where to be found.  The Mets were facing pitcher Tom Gorzelanny who came into the game with and ERA over eight!  That’s right, over eight.  And what did the Mets bats do?  The Mets mustarded just two hits, TWO!  Is there an echo in here?  I tell you what the echo is.  It is that voice that has been inside my head since September as I watched the listless Mets night after night, loss after loss, spiral out of control.  It is the sound of Jimmy Rollins saying, “We’re the team to beat.”  The echo is the sounds of other ball parks that house winners, guys who try and guys who want to win.  Right now, it seems Shea Stadium houses nothing but guys who have inflated salaries and fragile egos- whiners-”Oh the fans boo us.  Oh we have injuries.”  Save it!  What we have seen from some of the Mets this year has been pitiful.  No wonder the Mets fans boo!

Oliver Perez failed to make it out of the second inning today.  He left having pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up 2 hits, 7 runs (but only two of those were earned) 5 walks, and two strike outs.  Could this guy have been any worse?  I guess the answer is yes, but luckily manager Willie Randolph saved us the misery and pulled him in the second.  He just imploded.  Am I the only one who is sick of watching the Mets pitching staff walk just about every body is sight?  Even Santana who hardly walks anyone walked three on Tuesday night.  Can someone please retire the side in order like for one inning with out giving up three walks?  Oh wait, lets see-Jorge Sosa didn’t walk anyone.  We should give him some credit-only one of the five runs he gave up was earned.  Aaron Heilman performed well today!  The Mets finally found the perfect spot for him-put him in with a twelve run deficit and we’re good to go.  However, at this point I’m not sure we could trust him with a twelve run lead.

So the Mets jet off to face the league leading Arizona Diamond backs who have the best record in baseball and some of the best pitching in baseball.  Yeah-this should be fun.  If you are looking for Wednesday’s recap, uhh-THEY STUNK!  That about sums it up.

The New York Mets closed out their two game series against the Washington Nations with a 10-5 loss on Thursday night, going 3-4 on the road trip.  The Mets looked like they had rebounded from a three game losing streaking after winning the first game of the series, but starter Oliver Perez struggled and did not make it out of the fifth.  Perez pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits while recording 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Aaron Heilman came in and gave up a walk, a grand slam, and two singles before striking out Austin Kearns to end the inning.  Jorge Sosa did not fair much better giving up 3 runs; however because of an error by Jose Reyes, his third on the season, only one of those runs was earned.

Luis Castillo, Carlos Beltran, Ryan Church, Marlon Anderson, Oliver Perez each had one RBI. Anderson’s and Beltran’s RBI coming off homeruns.  The Mets had a total of 11 hits, leaving 9 guys on base.  The heart of the order was a combined 3 for 17, with both Wright and Delgado going 0-4.  Delgado’s batting average has dropped to .198.

The Mets started to rally in the ninth when Marlon Anderson hit a pinch hit home run and Jose Reyes and Luis Castillo reached on singles but, John Rauch settled in and retired the next three hitters in order to end the game.

For a second straight night, Carlos Delgado hit sixth in the order behind Ryan Church who occupied the fifth spot.  Church is swinging a hot bat right now hitting .354; this is a good sign as there was some concern about his offensive output coming into the season.   The Mets were without catcher Brian Schneider who is in a New York hospital to treat an infection in his left thumb.  Brady Clark was designated for assignment.  The Mets purchased the contract of catcher Gustavo Molina from Triple-A New Orleans.

The Mets could be in for a long series against the Braves if they continue to play the way they did on this road trip.

The New York Mets are probably glad they were only in Chicago for two games as they got whooped up on both games against the Cubs.  On Tuesday, the Mets lost 8-1 to drop their season record to 10-9.  They had their chances and were in both games against the Cubs, but the Cubs used runs in the late innings to blow open the games.

Nelson Figueroa took the loss for the Mets as he tossed five innings of seven hit ball.  He did give up three runs however.  Joe Smith pitched in relief and gave up one earned run.  The worst performance on the mound for the Mets however came from Jorge Sosa who gave up a grand slam in the eigth inning.

The lone run for the Mets came in the sixth inning when Brady Clark grounded into a fielder choice and Carlos Beltran scored.  The Mets bats were just silent as they only had five hits the entire game.  Can’t win the game when you don’t swing the bat well.

The New York Mets pick up their 8th loss of the season on Monday against the Chicago Cubs by a score of 7-1 putting them at 10-8 for the year.  Only able to get one run in the 6th inning the Mets struggled to get the big base hit all night long.  Grounding into four double plays sure didn’t help the Mets either.

John Maine started the game for the New York Mets throwing for six innings allowing five hits and two runs.  This loss put him at 1-2 for the year.  Duaner Sanchez, Aaron Heilman, and Jorge Sosa pitched the last two innings of the game.   Heilman gave up four earned runs and Sosa gave up one earned run.  What a terrible eigth inning for the Mets bullpen.

The only run for the Mets came in the sixth inning when Jose Reyes grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.  The Mets were only down 2-1 at that point, and that double play killed their rally.

The New York Mets will go up against the Cubs one more time this afternoon to see if they can come back after yesterday’s loss.

The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 on Sunday putting the Mets record at 10-7 for the year.  Letting the Phillies get 12 hits spread throughout the game, the Mets did their best and put nine hits on the board but still came up one run short for the loss.

Mike Pelfrey opened the night up for the Mets going five innings on the mound but gave up a staggering 10 hits and four runs in that time and only got two strikeouts.  Jorge Sosa, Pedro Feliciano,  and Joe Smith were brought in to pitch in relief but were not able to hold on for the win.  Feliciano took the loss as he gave up a run in the seventh inning.

It wasn’t a bad hitting night got the Mets as Jose Reyes got his second triple of the year.  Carlos Beltran led the Mets at the plate with two RBi while Luis Castillo and Ryan Church both had one RBI.

On Monday the Mets will travel to Chicago to battle the Cubs on the road.  This will be a big game for the Mets as the Cubs are on a roll this year already leading the National League Central Standings.

The New York Mets escaped with a 3-2 win in fourteen innings against the Washington Nationals Thursday night.  Damion Easley scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Mets the win.

Ryan Church and Carlos Delgado both had one RBI each for the Mets.

Jorge Sosa was the winning pitcher for the Mets as he improved his record to 2-1 on the season.  Nelson Figueroa had started the game for the Mets and pitched pretty good he just didn’t get any run support in the ballgame.  Figuerora pitched seven innings and only allowed three hits and two runs.  His one mistake was in the fourth inning when Nick Johnson hit a two-run home run off him.

The Mets were lucky to come away with the win against the Nationals.  I think if it would have been any other team other then the Nationals, the Mets would have been on the losing side.  What do you think?

The New York Mets blew their 3-0 lead in the late innings as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied to tie the game, but the Mets prevailed and picked up the win in 12 innings.  I wish the game wouldn’t have went 12 innings, as the Mets should have closed the deal in the 8th inning but give the team credit for coming back and still getting the win.

Jose Reyes scored the winning run in the 12th inning off a Angel Pagan single to centerfield.  Reyes had a wonderful slide into homeplate to score the winning run.  It was a very close plate, and if your a Mets fan you say he was safe, if you are a Phillies fan you say he was out.  All that mattered though was that the umpire called him safe and the Mets went onto win.

Ryan Church had two RBI and Carlos Beltan had one RBI in the game to go along with Pagans RBI.

When they Mets blew their lead in the late innings, they lost the game for John Maine who pitched a good game.  Maine pitched six innings and only allowed one earned run on five hits.  He did have five walks however so that is something that he will need to work on.

Aaron Heilman had the blown save in he game and then Jorge Sosa picked up the win.

The New York Mets made the Philadelphia Phillies pay for their four errors as they scored six unearned runs on their way to a 8-2 victory.  The Mets did exactly what any team should do when the other team struggles to play defense.  Make them pay, and make them pay by scoring a lot of runs.

Mike Pelfrey picked up his first win of 2008 in the game.  Pelfrey lasted five innings and gave up five hits and two earned runs.  Jorge Sosa, Pedro Feliciano, and Carlos Muniz all pitched out of the bullen and pitched very good.

Angel Pagan led the Mets at the plate with two RBI’s.  Jose Reyes, David Wright, and Damion Easley all finished the game with one RBI each.
