The New York Mets will be paying pitcher Oliver Perez more then what they wanted to after they lost his salary arbitration case.  The Mets had offered Perez $4.7 million dollars and Perez was asking for $6.5 million dollars which he will receive.

A little too much money for Perez if you ask me.  I don’t think Perez should have got that much money, more around the $5 million dollar mark would have been more acceptable I think.

The New York Mets and outfielder Ryan Church have a signed a one year contract that will pay Church $2 million dollars.  That is a pretty nice raise for Church, who can get three more raises via salary arbitration before he is a free agent.

I like the signing, as I know there would have been atleast five other teams that would have signed him for that amount if not more.  Now Church just needs to stay healthy and help the Mets reach the post season.

Johan Santana and the New York Mets used a couple extra hours to work out the details of a new six year contract that will pay Santana $137.5 million dollars.  The deal includes deferred money and a club option for 2014 with a $5.5 million buyout that could make the contract worth about $150 million over seven seasons. Depending on Santana’s performance, the option could become guaranteed.

Now the question everyone needs to ask, how will Santana perform with all the pressure he will have pitching in New York City?  Coming from Minnesota to New York is going to be a huge change for this all star pitcher.

The New York Mets pulled off a huge trade today as they are set to acquire starting pitcher Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins for four prospects.  The deal will only happen if the Mets and Santana can agree on a long term contract in the next 72 hours however.

The Mets are sending Carlos Gomez and Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey to the Twins.  That is a lot of pitching prospects for Santana, but that is something you have to give up to get a great pitcher like Santana.  The Mets are definately setup for a deep playoff run in 2008 with this trade.

Other teams in the National League are already talking having to face a Johan Santana and Pedro Martinez combination in a playoff series.  None of them are liking this!

Outfielder Endy Chavez and the New York Mets have agreed on a two year contract that will pay Chavez just below $4 million dollars.  Chavez can also earn a little more based on incentives.

Good signing on both ends of the deal I think.  Chavez says he is 100% ready to get going and wants to help the team reach the post season.  He should feel more relaxed in my opinion all season long as he won’t have to play for a contact offer in 2009.

The New York Mets signed eight new players today and invited them all to spring training.  INF Anderson Machado, RHP Juan Padilla, RHP Joselo Diaz, RHP Andy Cavazos, LHP Ryan Cullen, 3B Fernando Tatis, C Robinson Cancel and C Salomon Manriquez were all signed to minor league contracts.

Career minor league players is what you see right there pretty much.  Who knew Fernando Tatis was still trying to play baseball lol!  Dude needs to just hang up the cleats already if you ask me.

Right handed pitcher Duaner Sanchez has agreed on a one year contract with the New York Mets.  Sanchez is coming off shoulder surgery which caused him to miss the entire 2007 season.  He will be battling for a spot in the Mets rotation, and if he is healthy and throws the ball like he is capable of, he will probably land a spot in the bullpen.
